Back (2014)

I’ve long been fascinated with how much or little a view of someone from behind tells us about them. Is a photograph of someone from behind a portrait, can it be?

We tend to think of portraits as giving us some sort of insight into the sitter, can a back view do that? I set out to find out. This was a series of photographs of women I know.

What I did find out was that people are much happier being photographed with their faces not in view. They were less self conscious. But hands, hair, clothes, posture: these all tell a story too. I made around 40 back portraits.
